I’ve always wanted to knit socks! Do you have a pattern that you like? There are so many options on Etsy and other sites.

@Helen, you can’t go wrong with Rachel Coopey – her base structure is always (mostly?) the same, but she has a huge range of decorative patterns from simple up to very complex.

Or get yourself onto ravelry and have a hunt through the popular patterns there – you can see how they’ve turned out when other people have knitted them (in the ‘projects’ tab for each pattern) which I find super helpful: oh, so that jumper that everyone loves is a TERRIBLE shape for people of my proportions, good to know, etc

Thank you, Kat 2! I looked up Rachel Coopey’s patterns and am excited to give one of them a try. Also, good to know about the projects tab in Ravelry! That’s very helpful as I can basically gauge the pattern difficulty based on how other knitters’ socks turned out.

Kat, Ryelight socks by TinCan knits are the perfect starter pattern. The build from there. The good thing is you can make a lot of pairs the same since you wear them every day. I think have about 15 pairs in the drawer now.

Add a small snap! You can place and sew it so that it’s totally concealed. A tailor can do it super easily too.

Same here. Even as a B cup, I find gaps happen. I’ve had more success with button-ups labeled as ‘boyfriend’ style. The downside is they tend to be a bit boxy, but there are no gaps! I have used safety pins, too, or double-sided tape to close the gap.

I read that one fashion editor had hers sewn closed, so she has to pull them on over her head, but no gaps!

I am a 34DDD and definitely know a thing or two about the gap. Like the editor Gillet mentioned I have seen most of my button ups closed — but not the entire length of the shirt, just the space between two buttons that ends up being problematic. It means I can only wear the shirts closed but it’s a small price to pay to not have to worry about it. I wish there was a way I could show you just where to sew it so that the sewing is completely hidden. It’s not hard. You just have to be strategic about the stitching.

My mom has sewn my button-downs shirts closed for me & then I just slip them over my head.

Yes I also have sewn closed just the part over the bust! I match the thread color and sew along the seam and I really don’t think you can tell.

Universal Standard and Wild Fang sell button downs that have more snaps and buttons and so don’t gap. US sells in the widest range of sizes I’ve seen as well. Depends on your style but those shops might work.

I have this issue too and find buying boys’ button downs don’t do this. They are a little broader, maybe? Plus, i’m 5’3” and this helps with the sleeves being a correct length.

Always there’s a gap. Sometimes I pin the gap shut on the inside, sometimes I let it gap and wear my prettiest bra.

I struggle with this too! Nearly all of my button up shirts these days are “The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens” which have hidden extra buttons at the bust (“patented no gape technology” LOL). Kinda silly but it works amazing! Typically around $100/shirt but there are frequent sales so easy to snag one for less.

I just bought some of these a couple weeks ago! The lady who rang me up talked them up so much, I’ve now been saving them for a “special occasion” and still haven’t worn them ha ha

All 3 of my girls have loved books by Marianne Dubuc…..My House, Your House is a favorite. They also love Mr. Postmouse’s Rounds, The Path…..she has so many good ones!

I wonder if you are thinking of books by Jan Brett? When I taught second grade my students loved them, and the illustrations are intricate and beautiful!

+1 for Jan Brett being an amazing author/illustrator with many animals featured. Our kids loved being read these by our neighbour (a retired schoolteacher)!

I feel the EXACT same way about wearing stripe shirts with hoop earrings. I was a pirate for Halloween once in college, and that was basically my costume. Can’t get past it!

You should check out tshirts by Rouje! They are pricey, I’m not going to lie, but they are soooo comfortable, and often have the scalloping, sleeve-length, and scoop necks you mention. I live in mine.

Just gonna add here that if you want to take your villainery (villainousness?) to a whole ‘nother level, add some chunky chelsea boots or combat boots! They pair SO beautifully with the very on-trend floofy tops and you will feel like you can take over the world, mwah ha ha!

and while we’re on the subject of socks, i literally ask for them for christmas every year and every year people think i’m just being “humble” or “frugal.” but no — i just love good socks. maybe because i hate actual feet so much.
