Do or Don’t: Balloon Jeans

Balloon jeans are good for my smaller waist-large thigh-large calves body combo haha, so I love them!

Jeans are my lifestyle, so I will happily adopt ANY new silhouette as soon as I see it, and balloon jeans were no exception. I lost enough weight to have to give up my original two pairs, promptly purchased two new balloons. I think for me, a lot of thought has to go into the footwear: any flat sandal works, any sneaker without socks, and any boot that is tall enough to fill up the skin-gap. Love them with a flat chelsea boot. And yes, I do feel cool and current when wearing them. I give zero f***s if anyone doesn’t like my clothing choices.

I don’t give a rat’s ass what’s in style. I wear what I like and that RARELY coincides with what’s ‘in’. I knit and sew. A jacket I made recently, my husband said it looked bananas. Perfect.

Balloon jeans are a godsend for women with lipedema. I love them.

These remind me of the jeans I wore in 7th grade (1999?) And I loved them!! Apparently skinny jeans are out lol

This is a don’t for me. I have a long torso and something about the leg cut looks so wrong for me

These look so comfortable! I think they’d be great for a pear-shaped figure like my own. As some people have mentioned, you can balance out the “baloon” shape with something more fitted on top.

Balloon pants: I like the wide leg but not so much in denim. Couldn’t say until I tried them, but if people like them, go ahead and wear em’. Probably they would look horrible on me, and I need long pants anyway as I live in a cold city.

A commenter below also mentioned “dark eye circle trend”. I had no idea that was a thing! Honestly, though, as a person who has to start working much earlier than my natural rhythm, and who naturally has some dark circles, I love this trend! Ha!Ha! I am so happy that I can look so on-pointe when I am exhausted.

I like a good wide leg silhouette but I tried these last year and just felt like a cowboy showing up to a duel at sundown (a la https://www.partycity.com/adult-cowboy-chaps-281349.html). I opened them, tried them on, and mailed them right back.

Sorry, but I am with the hard pass votes. It might be “in”, but it is still an unflattering and boring look.

OK, I have a question for everyone and also this is funny because as a millennial I’ve recently been informed by ‘Gen-Z’ that skinny jeans are no longer acceptable. I honest to God called my girlfriends this week and asked them if I should give away my Madewell skinnies, the general concensus was no, but… I think that may be because we are all nearing our 30’s-lol. So I pose this same question to you all now: are skinnies no longer in style? Or are they a classic look?

I’m 61 and have seen countless jean trends come and go. Trends are something I’ve stopped paying attention and wear what works for me. For now, I switch between straight leg and boot cut. The boot cut are new and I love the balance they to my body type plus thy look good with boots, clogs and athletic shoes. Secondly, until recently people have worn full length jeans with no shoe issues. -Experiment and see- I have a couple of style heroes, Carolyn Bisset Kennedy is one. When in doubt I look at inspiration pictures of her.

I bought a pair similar to these last year and they are not flattering. Wanted to like them but they really only look good on certain body types. I looked frumpy and not in a chic way. Insta stars can pull them off with perfect angles and filters but that is about it.

I’m here to say that I like-no LOVE the show-your-ankles jean trend and I never ever ever want to go back to full length jeans. I think full length jeans are AWKWARD for shoe purposes. Also, I will support this Jean style as long as we never go back to low rise jeans. I lived through that Paris Hilton low slung-sit on your hips jeans and I will stop wearing pants if we go there. High rise for life.

Absolutely yes yes yes to these jeans! These are big in London right now – popular with all ages, shapes and sizes. They seem to elevate whoever wears them to a level of cool that is hard to explain?! I’m late 30s and these are perfect for my body now its post-kids and not as firm and youthful as it used to be. The trick to these is not caring too much – wear whatever shoe you like, whatever socks you like your favourite t shirt, some good lip stick and not too perfect hair, and you’re there! I’m a big fan of this silhouette and it’s so much more interesting than the “skinny” silhouette that’s been around forever. I hope you bought a pair Jo!

I’m plus size so it’s always hard to imagine IF something would look good/as intended on me. And because I mostly shop for clothes online, I’m not able to try before I buy. I really love brands like Tuesday of California that are intentional about making and modeling clothes on a diverse range of sizes. All of that to say, I cannot imagine buying these jeans. ha!

A big YES from me, a 5′ 3″ curvy UK size 12-14. I’ve been wearing this style for a year now and they make everything else in my wardrobe look fresh when I pair it with them. Summer – flat sandals/Bensimon trainers, winter Clarks lace-ups or thick-soled Chelsea boots. Seeing a lot of cool, arty women in London in this style, usually with an oversized coat and a beanie hat.

Totally into these jeans. I have several pair from Zara last winter and LOVE them. The length is fine, wear cute boots with them in the winter (Matisse has some great ones that fit nicely at the ankle and give lower leg coverage) and all sorts of sandals in the warmer months. They’d be cute with ballet flats, too. I’m 5’8″ so these types of jeans are definitely cropped on my legs.

Ew. This is one of those fashion trends that everyone is going to look back on in 10 years and be embarrassed about. Hard pass.
