Are you ever watching a TV show or movie where the on-screen couple is so electric that you almost can’t handle it? Here are nine movies and TV shows where I felt that way (and I’d love to hear yours)…
Have you seen the Before Sunrise triology? Sultry Julie Delpy and scruffy Ethan Hawke have such a natural connection, you’re rooting for them before they even get off the train in Vienna.
On the first day of rehearsal for Call Me By Your Name, director Luca Guadagnino asked stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet to flip to a page in the script, which happened to be a kissing scene in the grass. “So, then we started making out. And we’re making out, and making out, and making out, and no one’s saying stop,” Hammer explained on The Ellen Show. “All of a sudden, we both kind of stop and look, and Luca had just walked away and left us right there, rolling around in the grass.” It was definitely an icebreaker, laughs Chalamet: “It destroyed the ice.”
When, on Insecure, Issa and her ex Daniel start hanging out, you can cut the tension with a knife. They speak the same language and really get each other.
Fleabag. Two words: IT’LL PASS.
No matter how much Sharon and Rob argue in Catastrophe, they still laugh at each other’s jokes. You can see why they drive each other crazy and love each other madly. One example from season 2: Sharon and Rob are fighting, and when he gets into bed, she tells him not to touch her. He responds, “If you come anywhere near me, I’m going to scream.” Facing away from him, Sharon laughs, and boom, the fight is over. (I loved all four seasons of this show.)
I watched Lion on a flight and was sobbing like a baby! Such an incredible movie, and the connection between Rooney Mara’s and Dev Patel’s characters was tender and beautiful.
New Girl is such a light sitcom that I didn’t expect Nick and Jess to have serious on-screen chemistry. But the witty repartee! Those smoldering gazes! That first kiss in the hallway! Even the actors had to be held back. Says Jake Johnson, who played Nick: “Liz [Meriwether, the creator] has told us a lot of times in scenes, ‘Jake, don’t put your hand there. It’s too forward.’ They keep pushing us apart.”
The thing that really got me about A Star Is Born is how close-up the shots were. During intense scenes, the camera was almost in their faces, and it made the chemistry feel extra fiery.
Finally, although it’s not really sexual, the friend chemistry in Broad City was off the charts. Abbi and Ilana had a funny yet profound connection. “Here’s the truth: Friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, ‘bonus’ relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children,” wrote Emily Rapp. Two other amazing friendships: Leslie and Ann in Parks and Rec and Maya and Anna in Pen15.
