My Anniversary Gift for Alex (Alex, Don’t Look!)

Years ago we decided to pick a store for each anniversary, and each get each other something from that specific place. It was usually in some way indicative of what we were into at the time. We had a Mollusk anniversary (sweatshirts and beach blankets), a Heath Ceramics outlet anniversary (that was a good one…), a Glerups anniversary (the greatest house slippers known to humankind)…and…my capacity to remember things stops there. It’s fun though! It’s nice because you know you’re getting each other roughly equivalent gifts too.

We usually pick out a piece of art together for ourselves. One year it was a really nice coffee table from Denmark, sometimes a piece of handmade pottery. Some we go with the traditional theme and apply it to the art, or functional art piece we pick out. I like it because it feels like it’s a celebration of us.

Happy anniversary! Very timely post for me. My husband and I’s 9th anniversary is approaching. We follow the traditional gifts for fun and this year is willow?! Would love some good suggestions.

We don’t really exchange gifts on our anniversary, but we always write each other a mushy card. My husband makes the BEST cards every year – he wouldn’t call himself a good artist, but he always makes a series of little stick figure cartoons of everything “big” that happened for us over the year. I love them so much, and it always makes me laugh looking at his terrible little drawings and the memories that went with them.

We usually take a trip, not necessarily big, but often someplace we’ve never been. ( Walla, Walla last year, Palm Springs this year) I’ve sort of followed the traditional gifts. On our ninth, metal, I gave my husband nine gifts…the metal was a mixing bowl, and the flip flops I gave him counted as two, to mark the many journeys we’ve walked together. I’ve actually had surgery twice right before our anniversary…called them our sickness and health anniversaries!

We are together twelve years, and in few days we have our second wedding anniversary. We decided together that we’re going to buy two years r twelve (still part of the discussion) olive tree. We want to take care about it and let it grow with us. I can’t wait looking at it every morning.

Love Negronis! I can barely remember anniversary gifts. It’s usually around the Oscars so we make a fancy dinner? I think at some point we decided to plan a fun (not necessarily expensive) trip around that time of year BUT I’ll never, ever forget our latest (15th!!!) wedding anniversary gift: my son was born the day before. Best DIY ever ;) Yes, 15th. I’m 42. Congratulations!

My husband and I aren’t big gift people, but we love a good tradition. So for our wedding, I commissioned coffee mugs hand painted with the date of our marriage and our initials because we always start the day together with coffee and the newspaper. They were a big hit on the morning of our wedding, but once we got home I wondered how to keep their use special. We started using them to drink coffee each month on the morning of the day we got married (our “month-iversary.”) We’ll be married nine years this December, and while occasionally we pull the mugs out on the 13th instead of the 12th, we have kept the monthly tradition going.

We are celebrating our second anniversary this October, and decided last year on our first anniversary rather than exchange gifts, we would pick one gift for both of us to enjoy. Our first anniversary gift was a beautiful watercolor from an New Orleans artist. The image is one of our favorite photos from our wedding, and we chose the artist because New Orleans is where we met! This year, we are getting new linens for our bed including new fluffy pillows and a duvet that feels like a cloud. And, as I type this, I am noticing we happen to have followed the “traditional gifts” (year 1- paper, year 2- cotton) without even realizing, what a funny coincidence!

We follow the traditional gifts, but very loosely interpreted, and with no pressure. For the fourth (I think?) flowers was one of the options, and I love to bake, so my husband got me a selection of different kinds of flour – bread flour, almond flour, whole wheat flour, etc. It was so perfect!

Our anniversary was this weekend too. The 12th. I never remember. I wake up to flowers and a card every year and slap the forehead. Birthday’s, I’m on it, but no idea why this won’t stick after 23 years. We had a fantastic wedding, moved into our house 6 days later and have 2 kids. Luckily my husband thinks it’s funny and never gets mad at me. So, no, no presents!

If anyone will make a sweater that just says ‘Ranch dressing’ in all CAPS, I will buy your entire supply.

On our anniversary every year without fail we have pizza and beer. This is because on our first anniversary we were caring for our daughter who was born prematurely and we had a huge medical bill and no way to pay it. My husband looked at me and said, “We’re so poor we can’t even afford pizza and beer to celebrate our anniversary.” Jump ahead more than 30 years and I’m happy to say everything turned out fine and our tradition makes us smile every year.

My most memorable anniversary gift from my husband was a framed collection of small “papers” from our travels: train tickets, boarding passes (from the time when they weren’t on our phone), and scanned pages from an old passport. It’s fun to look at and reminisce! BTW Joanna we share the same anniversary – date and year!

Cute! A honeymoon cocktail is so cool… enjoy the celebrations! Not married but my girlfriend and I did recently celebrate six months dating (I’m taking any chance to celebrate!!! Haha) we had a day trip to the coast and she bought me a lovely handmade mug while we were there (which is perfect as my favourite gifts are special versions of everyday items) and then back in town, I took her for dinner.

We don’t do anniversary presents but we do always have a weekend away the nearest weekend to the anniversary. We splash out on somewhere lovely to stay and eat good food the whole weekend. A win for both of us. This year was our 25th and we were hoping to return to Italy which was were we spent out honeymoon but we were in lockdown and it was a take out delivery instead. Usually it is somewhere not too far because we don’t want to spend too long driving just for a night or two.

Because my husband has turned me on to such good music over the years, for our tenth anniversary, I went to our local record shop and with the help of the staff, I bought 10 CDs–one from each year since we had been married from not-yet-known to us musicians. My favorite new discovery from that escapade is the Portland band, Houndstooth.

Fun post! Happy anniversary! We loosely follow the traditional/modern gifts, but with our own twist (often no purchases necessary). For “paper,” I printed and bound our emails to each other while we were dating long distance through when we got engaged; he gave me his homemade “Guide to the Care and Feeding of Your Husband,” a wry and funny take on himself. The wood year, we planted a tree. For this year (seven), we ditched the formula and framed two gigantic abstract paintings our three-year-old had made with her feet and that had been masking taped to the wall above our couch the past year. (Thank you, FrameItEasy!) The paintings make us happy!

On our first anniversary I made my husband these photo strips customized with pictures from our first year of marriage. He loved it so much that I’ve done one every year! You can add in 36 pictures, and I always try to include a little of everything, from holidays to significant events to Snapchat selfies LOL

Our wedding was in March, so our 2021 anniversary coincided with one year of pandemic, which was a little heavy. But we also laughed at 36 pictures of zoom birthday parties and masked gatherings and 30* outdoor hangs with our pod and lots of time at home with our toddler. Every year has its sour notes, and some can really take you to your knees, but it’s an amazing exercise to gather the sweet notes once a year.

Perfect timing! TODAY is our two-year anniversary. My husband is so giving and generous. He lets me sleep in when our baby has been up during the night. He stays home one day a week (and works on Saturdays to make up for the missed day) so I can go to a part-time job that I love. He encourages me to stay connected with friends and happily watches our son when I go for the occasional girls weekend away. So, for our anniversary, I coordinated with his best guy friends to plan a baby-free boys week away in Santa Fe (his favorite place). I hope he will stay up late, sleep in even later, laugh a lot with his buds, and miss me and our little one every minute. 😊

I’m going to surprise him with this tomorrow night on our celebratory date and I. can’t. wait. ♥️

I aspired to do themed gifts but I only managed Paper… Last year I blamed pandemic disruption but this year we roadtripped across the country to move! I love your idea to just celebrate belatedly because Year 4 is flowers and I could totally manage to give him some!
