We recently got an email from a reader looking for a statement sweater.

“I wear boring/drab sweaters at my desk job, but every year I treat myself to a statement sweater, just for me. Anything fun you can suggest? No neutrals allowed. Thank you!!” — Emily

Bought it on a whim at Target and I get compliments every time I wear it! The bright pink is totally outside of my norm but I think the color naturally lifts people’s spirits and looks cool with silver hair !

When I want a “statement sweater” I want a STATEMENT – so let’s up the ante a bit, eh?
Now, given, it’s hard to find statement sweaters because it costs more to make sweaters, so clothing companies are hesitant to go out on a stylistic limb. But still, we can be a bit more adventurous that a demure heart print of a touch of color blocking, can’t we? These get more statementy as you go:

Love your sentiment! Can I use this moment, though, to ask why Doen doesn’t seem to be able to have their models wear a bra? I mean, sure, it looks sexy, but I’d like to have an idea of what it looks like to wear their clothes in the real world, not only in a French chateau with your lover.

Emily – LOL! I am glad somebody besides me has wondered about this. Those idle and voluptuous Doen models always look like they are barely in the clothes, about to shed them while languishing in a meadow and run naked through the wildflowers, and I just can not relate. I would do better with a model who not only wears a bra but possibly also a cardigan, while at the grocery store or the car wash or the post office.

Warning! The Babaa summer flame sweater is NOT RED. It is definitely orange red, but very orange. I ordered two “red” sweaters from Babaa and was fooled both times.

I feel silly posting a second time, but sweaters are a love language for me. This Rachel Antonoff rainbow cookie sweater was a Christmas gift and delights me. There are little sparky sprinkles on top of the dang cookie, it is so fun. I fear it may be sold out in several sizes but worth getting on the waitlist.

These sweaters are an investment as they are pure wool and the designs are uniquely Australian-centric (Princess Diana was even sent one with a koala on it as a wedding gift!). Whenever I wear mine, it’s the most epic mood booster and I feel really close to my mum as she thrifted it before I long-term ‘borrowed’ it. Ironically, I’m wearing mine as I type this while in hotel isolation with you-know-what in Dublin. I’ve got the sweater in my luggage to take home to Australia to my mum for safe keeping while we travel for the year. We were getting ready to fly home to family for the first time in two years when I tested positive on my pre-flight PCR test. I’m so grateful to have this piece of my mum with me in the form of the Jenny Kee sweater. Plus, I’m able to do some dopamine dressing while getting through this sickness and the sadness of not really knowing when we’ll get home.

Much like hair is everything, I kind of feel like sweaters are everything, too xx

And I remember these sweaters. The same huge print concept was big for t-shirts also and I had a few of those when I visited family in Australia in the 80’s. Oh boy, what a trip down memory lane.

Ok, I just have to weigh in on this because I, too, have been on the hunt for the perfect sweater. Specifically, the perfect Valentine’s Day sweater! For years, I’ve wanted something fun and not elementary school teacher to wear on my fave holiday and THIS WAS THE YEAR.

Finally found it Gap Factory, of all places. Bright, candy heart red with a big AMOUR across the chest. It’s fun, it’s on theme, it’s francais (tres parfait!) and I feel good in it! Bless The Gap forever for their forgiving fits. My Mom Bod is so grateful.
