There was a recent article about this. https://cupofjo.com/2022/01/27/jewish-women-on-antisemitism/

Whenever there is an article related to race and black people there always seems to be comments around ‘what about jews.

Lets concentrate on the article and really think about the message that it is trying to communicate.

There wasn’t anything in the NYT article. Surely that wouldn’t make much sense, given there are millions of Asian/Middle Eastern tourists?

So much of travel advice says to dress like a local, blend in, don’t make yourself a target for pickpocketing, etc. As a Chinese Canadian, I always get a bit frustrated with that advice because no matter how hard I try to dress like a local, I still won’t look like I belong. I can’t change the way I look.

My husband is of Lebanese, German and Argentine decent, and he looks more Arab than anything else. I am Native American and Peruvian, however, my traits are that of the clearly colonized-Peruvian history my father’s side endured. I look white. Whenever my husband, two young daughters and I had to stop in a small town for gas or food, we were hyper aware that we were the only ones who looked different. Many places people were friendly, but there were absolutely places where we felt the urging pressure to fill up and go. My husband had to run into a Walmart in Anderson, California to grab diapers while I waited in the car with the sleeping babies. I noticed my husband walking rather briskly back to the car holding his head down. When he got into the car and I asked him if he was ok, he replied, “These people don’t like us. The cashier wouldn’t serve me and told me to use Self Check-Out. There were other customers in line behind me. We’ll get diapers in the next town.” I looked up from my phone and saw country trucks emblazoned with Confederate flags. Sadly, vacation and fear go hand in hand in certain parts of the world.

HB, I do the same. I would look at the reviews to scan for those from Asian and other minority groups… just to make sure that this was an inclusive host or area that other minorities feel safe to be in.

Omg. Always!!! Always ignored. And our fear is no less! No matter how nice or well behaved we are, how we follow all the same rules … the comments and looks are downright scary. Yet even here on cup of jo- it’s barely mentioned.
