Hi, just to clarify that leaving without saying goodbye is NOT a cultural norm for either Irish or French people. Just the opposite, in Irish and French culture, generally feel the way you describe (e.g., what is wrong.? Are they ok?) if someone left without saying goodbye. The phrases “Irish” or “French goodbye were originally used/intended as insults. I think (hope) people using those phrases today in the USA aren’t aware they are actually offensive. Hopefully this info is helpful.

I always say it’s a house rule. My home, my rules. No cleaning and helping. They came over to play, converse, and eat, not to help me clean my house. My friend made a beautiful postcard I have on my fridge that says “Don’t clear while guests are still near” or something like that and I always point to that for the few stubborn guests!
