The art of not taking things personally. “‘Emotional generosity’ is the ability to see past behaviors that we don’t understand and proactively look for compassionate ways to explain them. It’s easy to do this for young children. If they start crying or throwing a tantrum, we wonder whether they are hungry, or tired, or hurt. Sadly, it’s harder to do this for adults — and especially our co-workers. And yet a more generous interpretation of their difficult behavior often ends up being right.”

Says Madeleine on four fun things: “The other day, my husband was at the park with our one-year-old. Another couple and their son were playing nearby. My husband and the other dad started chatting — you know, the usual ‘how old is your kid?’ kind of playground talk. Anyway, the couple and their son eventually packed up and loaded into their car to leave. After sitting in their car for a few minutes, the dad came back (by himself) and sheepishly said to my husband, ‘My wife says I have to make more dad friends, so she sent me back here to get your number so we can hang out.’ My husband was thrilled and I cracked up so much when he later told me. How cute is that! I just love imagining the conversation in the car and the man’s wife ‘making’ him go back out to ask my husband for his number. Anyway, we are going to meet up in the park next week. This may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Says Kelley on conversations with Toby and Anton: “As my husband walked into the bathroom for potty assistance the other night, my four-year-old says, ‘Here comes another one of Mister Dad’s craaaazzy butt wipes!’ Makes me wonder what kind of pizzaz he’s offering to that butt wipe that I’m not!”
