By the wonderful Jessica Olien.
P.S. Looking forward and small kindnesses.
Oh yes — breakfast brownies are where it’s AT. Or if you were me this morning, chocolate chunk cookies + morning coffee. Reasons I love being an adult.
Celebratory desserts are my absolute favourite.
Oh how I miss those family get-togethers to celebrate special occasions.
I had my first warm day soft serve today!
So good :)
Leftover thanksgiving pumpkin pie for breakfast the next morning.
One of my most treasured memories of childhood was when, on occasion, my mom would make us chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. It was always the Toll House recipe on the back of the the bag, scaled for the two of us to have a few cookies apiece, warm and gooey out of the oven. I hadn’t thought about that in years, and reading this post and others comments brought me back to that tiny apartment kitchen with the wonky sloped linoleum floor.
my absolute fave is birthday cake for breakfast the day after <3 something about cake thats been sitting out on the counter for 12ish hours and a coffee is highly satisfying <3 especially if its covered in funfetti frosting!
I do this every year on the day after my birthday! It’s my fav little tradition
One of the great tragedies of being a woman is hearing other wonderful amazing cool women speak about sweets as if partaking is a moral shortcoming: “oh I shouldn’t” or “I’m being so bad” or “I’m going to regret this later.” Dessert is such an absolute joy and it just breaks my heart that so many people have a tricky relationship with it. I love seeing anytime its celebrated to thank you for this!
This week I made NYTimes Earl Gray Tea Cake with Dark Chocolate and Orange Zest. Really really great, highly recommend.
I’d like to expand breakfast brownies to include basically any “morning after” breakfast dessert with a cup of coffee: a slice of birthday cake with an iced coffee the morning after the party, pecan pie with hot black coffee for bfast after thanksgiving, a slice of fruit pie the morning after a summer picnic, a chocolate chip cookie dipped in coffee, eaten sneakily so the toddler doesn’t demand cookies for his breakfast.
Yes!! For me it’s the leftover chocolate chip cookie with my coffee – I even love it a little bit stale! Heaven!
i JUST commented this above!! yes yes! a thousand times YES!
I could not agree with you more. Leftover dessert with coffee, despite often being eaten hiding from my kids, is the best dessert.
I never eat cake…except for birthdays/weddings. Been missing those special times with loved ones for such a long time. Looking forward to the days we can celebrate together again. ??
Ramona: (which is my daughters name and I LOVE it) it sounds like its time to bake a cake and eat it too! Just because, sending lots of sugary hugs <3
Pumpkin pie the morning after Thanksgiving, served fridge-cold with a hot coffee alongside. Chef’s kiss!
For me it’s pecan pie and coffee the morning after Thanksgiving!! Best slice of pie all year!
THIS!
YES! I just added this comment, and scrolled down a bit further than I had before and… voila!
A little scoop of leftover whipped cream makes it a balanced breakfast.
This is actually my favorite part of thanksgiving.
I live alone and hardly ever bake because I will eat the entire thing in one sitting. But when I go home to see my mom, we bake. Banana bread. Spice cake. Muffins. But the last 4 visits it has been Grandma’s pound cake and Sticky Toffee Pudding (the British variety). Pound cake is basically a breakfast food when it’s mom and me. I always bring a few slices back home with me and eat them for breakfast with my coffee until its gone. Almost like taking a piece of my mother home with me; it helps ease the homesickness I always feel when I leave. And of course fresh, homemade whipped cream and fresh cut fruit is added to it!
The greatest discovery I made for small batch baking is that some things freeze well unbaked. I currently have pre-portioned cookie dough, cornmeal biscuits and chocolate chip scones in my freezer!
I saw a TikTok yesterday where a guy said “Did you know you can just…make yourself a cake? And eat it?” and took a bite of a cake in front of him, and that was the whole TikTok and I was like “yes, yes you can!!” It was so simple and perfect. Make yourself a cake and enjoy it!!
I made an Oreo icebox cake and banana nilla wafer icebox cake for our gathering in the backyard today and the anticipation of people taking dessert on a sunny Thursday is half the fun!
Just had a random ice cream while walking the dog (my husband is a terrible dessert instigator and I love him for it) and it was HEAVEN.
I’m single, and that is a VERY desirable quality in a partner!
YES to being married to someone who also loves dessert, when i decide to go out for a late scoop of ice cream and i offer to get my husband something and he says ” no thank you” (which isnt often) it makes me slightly sad… ice cream {dessert} is better shared together <3
Yes to all of these! I would expand on the “breakfast brownies” and say any leftover dessert for/with breakfast. And, spontaneously replacing lunch with a bowl (or two) of ice cream. Also, an unplanned weeknight dessert that you suddenly realize you have the time and ingredients to pull off.
Peaches and cream in our house is grilled peaches with ice cream—SO good!! Yay summer!
Coffee cake always. Any good / easy recipe recommendations for coffee cake?
I’m biased because it’s my sister’s recipe but I think this one is *che’fs kiss*:

She has other coffee cake recipes too if you’re allergic to nuts.
YES!! Thank you for asking – I love to share recipes. I just made this recipe from Alexandra Stafford, a buttermilk blueberry breakfast cake, and it is excellent. https://alexandracooks.com/2011/06/29/buttermilk-blueberry-breakfast-cake/
Please! I’m a horrible baker and cook but I’d be willing to give this a shot. Favourite dessert.
If you’re not a “baker” this one is super easy and SO GOOD. I’d recommend “swirling” the cinnamon / nut layers in. And beat for 10min in a stand mixer, if possible (get lots of air in!) https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/15399/cinnamon-coffee-cake-ii/
loved it
This gluten-free carrot cake from Bon Appetit that my husband makes every year for my birthday:

I spend the other 364 days of the year DREAMING about it!
Yes! That carrot cake is the best! I make it for my husband’s birthday every year and it’s always a hit
My favorite desserts are the ones that I make for other people. One of my greatest kicks in life is seeing the smiles on other people’s faces when I bestow upon them a special treat that I have whipped up. It’s usually not anything fancy, but I love baking for my kids, my family, my friends, my coworkers, anyone who will take it really! I’ve always felt that my baking was a selfless act of love for others, however, upon reflection it appears that my motivation is not entirely altruistic. I think I also do it for myself– baking and sharing the fruits of my labor with others is something that makes me just as happy as it makes the people who receive it. :)
So sweet! What a lovely way to make the world a happier place. :)
Lindsay, my Mom is the same as you – she bakes for the joy it gives to others, especially her neighbors! This is one of the things I love most about her – and I bet it makes you beloved as well. Cheers to your giving spirit and your wonderful baked goods!
I will add these 2: #1 is the one my home-from-college son makes, using an actual cookbook and even improvising on the recipe, while I marvel silently that he used to be a BABY and somehow he is now 19 years old and can bake a cake from scratch. And #2 is any dessert enjoyed sitting on the couch in the evening in my pajamas while drinking a cup of mint tea and watching a favorite program.
As I read these one by one I thought “Oh yes, that’s good”, “Oh yum”, “Oh those are my favorite too”. Basically, as a dessert lover, this picture sums things up nicely. Just reading it was satisfying!
I think it may be peaches and cream.
Pie. Pie pie pie pie pie. That is all. :)
Definitely ate a breakfast brownie as I read this, which is perfection.
I also love that one cadbury creme egg per season, when i get excited to see it in the drugstore and savor the sugar and chocolate that tastes like childhood!
yes!!! warm them up for a few in your hand and its heaven!
