the lost daughter movie

Have you seen The Lost Daughter? The psychological drama film follows a professor on a solo vacation, who meets a younger mother at the beach and flashes back to her own parenting experience. It absolutely stopped me in my tracks. (My friend Lizzy posted after watching: “I am not okay!!!!!!”) What I found fascinating was how every woman in the film vacillated between being seen as a “madonna” or a “whore” — and once you age out of those roles, you’re sort of… nowhere. Maybe a shrew? I cannot stop thinking about the movie, and I am now planning to rewatch and soak it all up again. It has soared into my favorites list (along with The Father, When Harry Met Sally, and Goodfellas — all so different, ha).

nyc art prints by flat vernacular

Digging these art prints of New York City. The pizza rat!

Cyrus Ferguson created an Instagram series called “Unintentional Sculpture Analysis,” where he breaks down — in perfect art-world patter — different scenes around Brooklyn. An empty lot, scaffolding, a discarded Christmas tree, they’re all suddenly fine art pieces with a LOT to unpack. I laughed so much watching these.

caramelo tortillas

I read about Caramelo tortillas on Lottie + Doof’s holiday gift guide and ordered three packs for Alex. Made with duck fat, pork fat or avocado oil, the tortillas taste amazing — super thin, super chewy, super flavorful. They’re made in Kansas by Mexico-born-and-raised Ruben Leal, who missed the kind of tortillas he ate growing up. Such a great gift for a food enthusiast, don’t you think?

P.S. More fun things, and a darkly funny book I can’t stop thinking about.
