A Cool Titanic Book

I’m not a parent so can’t weigh in from that perspective but this was funny to read as I too had a deep Titanic in obsession phase that included a lot of listening to “my heart will go on” while processing all the feels for Leo and Kate lol.

Will say the “heart of the ocean” necklace my mom gifted me in 2nd grade was a deep hit and highly suggest scoping one on Etsy if you have a real enthusiast on your hands. I fortunately moved on trom that phase but it’s now a good memory.

i love that anton is so into the titanic! my kid couldn’t even make it past the opening credits of the movie, with the sad irish music playing and the families waving from the boat in slow motion as they set sail on that final voyage…. he refuses to try to watch it again knowing the outcome. anyone else have a kid who can’t take real-life tragedy in stories? or dramatic background music?…

One of my colleagues told me a gorgeous story the other day that is Titanic themed. His friend as a kid utterly adored the movie- it was his favourite -but the catch was that his mother had only shown him half the movie- he didn’t know Jack died the end. Then, when he was a teen he watched the film with friends and without his mum there to bring it to an early close he was utterly bereft!

I first heard about the Titanic in 5th grade and the neophyte history nerd that I was became so interested! Two years later the movie came out. I was obsessed. My friend & I used to stay after school in the computer lab & use Netscape Navigator to search down every Titanic movie photo we could find. My doors were covered with photos. It’s still the only impressive two-handed piano song I know….

If any Titanic buffs are interested, there is a documentary movie called “The Six” (produced by James Cameron), about 6 Chinese national passengers who were on the Titanic when it sank and survived. Little was known about the passengers (or acknowledged). One of the survivors, Wing Sun, came to the US to start a new life and never mentioned his experience to his family. We were lucky to see the movie and hear a panel talk, including Sun’s son Tom Fong, at our local film festival. The documentary was pretty fascinating and shared a different perspective from what we’ve all seen and heard about the Titanic. It’s maybe geared more for adults and older children than younger kids. Anton needs to visit Halifax, Nova Scotia. About 150 Titanic victims are buried here and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has a few artifacts. He also might enjoy this book from a local publisher https://nimbus.ca/store/children-of-the-titanic.html

I’ve recently rediscovered The Big Orange Splot reading it to my baby. It’s such a fun story and has unique illustrations, the kind that a kid could actually draw.

I’m currently reading the fortunes of jaded women- 100 or so pages in it seems good!
My toddler is loving anything llama llama, as well as the illustrations in any book by Byron Barton.

We’re smack in the middle of this with my 8yo! We recently saw (a highly edited by me) Titanic and she’s crushing hard on Leo. She loves documentaries and photos about it. She’s going to LOVE this, thank you so much for sharing 🤗

When my boys were young I read all kinds of books to them. But the American Girl books surprised me, my boys loved them. (I have no daughters)
They are well written, provide a history lesson and more.

I bet Anton would love Polar: The Titanic Bear by Daisy Corning Stone Spedden (my kids did) And the back story/history of the Spedden family is fascinating.

I saw TITANIC three times in the theater. I spent almost ten hours of my life watching TITANIC! And I saw Samson and Goliath (the cranes that built the Titanic) on my honeymoon in Belfast (where I saw SNAKES ON A PLANE in the theater, just once). I don’t know what to tell you, man; my teens and twenties were spicy meatballs.

A high school friend who joined me for at least one of those screenings was here in NYC last summer and we saw TITANIQUE the musical, in which Celine Dion takes over a tour of the Titanic and retells the story of the movie, and Ariana Grande’s brother plays Victor Garber. It’s now off-Broadway and no longer in the supermarket basement where we saw it, but I recommend it anyway.

LOL, “Titanic Enthusiasts.” Growing up, we thought our youngest brother was so funny for being Titanic-obsessed. He was born on April 14, the day the Titanic hit the iceberg (sank on the 15th, of course). But it appears to be a common interest! He went through a stage of childhood between ages 5 and 9 when his knowledge of the ship and the details of the sinking were so deep. SO DEEP. Aren’t childhood obsessions the best?

Maybe the Titanic resonates so deeply because it’s hubris distilled for the modern age; the best, the most dazzling, the unsinkable ship that goes down. Like all disasters, it’s also a microcosm of human generosity, bravery, sacrifice, and love. Reading about it allows us to rehearse what we’d do in such a situation. I like to think that in a crisis all those Titanic buffs draw upon Molly Brown’s example and say, “Turn this lifeboat around and see who else we can save!” I know my brother is definitely that guy. I love this! I have a son (now 15) who has been obsessed with the Titanic for the past 11(!) years. We have a large shelf of books and are currently working on a lego Titanic model!

My son is obsessed, and we have so many Titanic books, but not this one! We’ll have to get it. Do you have I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, the graphic novel version? It’s so good it makes adults tear up.
