What would you add? By the wonderful Grace Farris.
P.S. Winter pick-me-ups and cozy pants.
We’re heading out to the Botanical Gardens today to celebrate Lunar New Year with our 3 and 4 year olds. It’s a beautiful sunny yet brisk day in NYC.
Always spot on!
“Stare in to the abyss while playing a board game” <– so me!!!
My 7-year-old just got really into mancala and I love it; it almost feels meditative!
On a whim I started making a new quilt last week that has donuts, cinnamon rolls and cups of cafe latte. I even made a quilt block of a chocolate donut with dark cherry icing. Hopefully I can finish it soon and snuggle away under it in February and March.
Oooh, I love this! What a cozy idea for late winter.
Haha! Wonderful indeed! I always look forward to Grace’s work!
We live in central New York, and I saw the sun today for the first time in Two Weeks. It has just been cloudy and dreary. I got dressed and the dog ready as fast as I could, but by the time we got outside, the sun was gone, and it was back to clouds. I was so upset I cried. I feel like Margot in All Summer in A Day. Maybe tomorrow? I think I will go stare into an abyss! (I’m really doing okay, but boy could I use some sunshine!)
Feel this so much, DIanna! nna! Same! always think of that story in times like these- super eerie! mes like these! I read it so long ago, but it still haunts me in times like these! Two weeks of rainy cloudy weather, and my husband has been sick the whole time. Most of the time he’s been unable to get out of bed and has such a bad sore throat that he can’t talk. Things have been tough! Today was the first day of sun, and I did get outside for a walk. I live in MA, so hopefully, you’ll get the sun tomorrow. :)
sorry for the typos! I can’t scroll up to proofread my comments-
Stalk airbnb endlessly. Book a week at a beach house in Maine in July. (Vow that you will not buy a single article of clothing for yourself this year or go out to eat ever again in order to begin to afford said beach house.) Count the number of days until you will be there.
OMG yes! We love this one! https://www.vrbo.com/2412007?noDates=true&unitId=2979698
Warm cat-belly huffing. Best aromatherapy in town.
It’s the “whilst” that truly made me lol – TGIF, everyone!
Citrus taste test is happening at my house! Jenny R’s newsletter this week (subscribe! I love her DALS newsletter!) suggests hosting a dinner party and serving a “sliced citrus salad” for dessert. I just got back from the grocery store where I bought: a red pomelo, a white pomelo, a sumo orange, a navel orange, and something called a CHOCOLATE orange (not a Terry’s but a real fruit). Let the festivities begin!
A chocolate orange?! I love this.
YES to this fabulous citrus taste test! I know what we’ll be doing this weekend!
Staring into the flames of our cozy wood stove and ignoring the snow and ice that needs shoveling.
Drink tea and look at flower and seed catalogs, and then go out to see if the snowdrops are blooming (they are!) and crocus foliage is poking up (not yet!).
+1 on Crocus Watch 2023!
Actually, all of that is exactly what we’ve been doing, lol. Plus, marvel at every small additional ounce of daylight after 5pm!
Yes to the extra daylight Erin! I was making dinner last night and marveling that it wasn’t dark yet!!
I love this – sounds like Ms Rumphius. I’m envisioning you at the table like her surrounded by her catalog picking out lupine seeds.
Am I the only one who finds herself suddenly looking around my house itching to do some kind of upgrade? Even something tiny, like, buying a new dish dry rack, or some new bath rugs? I think in winter, I’m inside so much, that suddenly I need something that makes my indoor life…better…somehow.
Nope, not just you! I’ve listed a dozen items on craigslist this week and fantasized about several small pick-me-up projects around the house.
Absolutely! What small pleasures can make your daily time indoors more joyful? I say go for the dishrack and the cozy bathmat.
On these past weeks, I’ve done all these things! In all fairness, winter is when my home bothers me enough to get my house properly in order, LOL.
Not at all, Connie! I just repainted my kitchen!
Not at all! I just convinced my husband to wallpaper our bedroom and build us a new closet. I’m so excited.
New waffle weave bath towels for us!
The search for the thermostat setting/clothing combination that keeps the hot-flashing woman of the house comfortable all day.
Here too!
don’t forget jigsaw puzzles !
I’m definitely Elsa. Bundle up and head outside anyway! Of course, much more fun if you’re in a place that has snow.
Bundle up extra cozy and go for a hike on the quiet and deserted trails because it’s so cold! My favorite time of year to hike.
Learn to craft the perfect Hot Toddy, both alcoholic and a non-alcoholic version.
Tells me more about NA options!
Okay so yogi ginger tea, half a lemon, and tons of honey. It’s a good non-alcoholic hot toddy. You must be generous with the lemon and honey to take it next level.
That cashmere wrap you bought on deep discount January 1st and a tin of fancy tea that cost almost as much. Add: light nonfiction, Mythic Quest, or old Brendan Fraser movies.
Hahaa, busted! I just finished a round of staring at the board game – my son was pretty annoyed but I just couldn‘t focus. I can‘t wait for the sunlight to return and bring back my power!
“Stare into the abyss while playing a board game.” 😆😆😆😆😅
Truth
Why is the abyss suddenly so alluring the moment someone is trying to explain the instructions to a new board game? It’s like I immediately enter into a separate plane of existence.
A page-turning book, a Netflix binge-worthy series, a hot cup of cider & a pair of warm, cozy flannel jammies :-).
“The ‘Guess what virus I have’ game”! Fun for the whole family. Ugh.
THAT ONE SUCKS!
Ugh. We are playing the same game in my house with a newborn nonetheless.
Ugh, yeah, zero out of five stars for that one.
You were exposed to COVID! Skip a turn!
Your school age child child has a cold. Take them to school just to be called back by the office two hours later to pick them back up!
My K&2nd graders had hand foot and mouth last week!? I guess we are catching up on the preschool viruses we missed out on during covid. Hang in there!
