Have you seen the The Worst Person in the World? Directed by Joachim Trier, the Norwegian film follows Julie, a 29-year-old woman in Oslo, as she struggles to figure out work, love and her direction in life. Although the career storyline felt half-baked — after successful starts in medicine and psychology, Julie gets a pay-the-rent job at a bookstore and abruptly drops all work ambitions/angst? — the movie overall was funny, fresh and utterly captivating. I LOVED the scene where she meets a guy at a wedding. They’re both in relationships, so they agree not to cheat, but their flirtations end up feeling as, or even more, intimate than sex. Here’s the trailer, if you’d like to see.
One thing I like about winter? Half zip sweaters. They make everyone look instantly attractive and windswept, and they’re easy to pull on with jeans. Here are three: stripe, pockets and sweatshirt.
A new Canadian program allows some doctors to provide patients with free annual passes to national parks, since nature is such a pick-me-up for the body and soul. Doctors are encouraged to prioritize patients who might not otherwise be able to afford passes. Very cool.
Have you ever made Marian Burros’s famous plum torte? The New York Times featured the recipe every September for seven years, and when they stopped, they received a torrent of angry letters from readers. Needless to say, it’s one of the most popular recipes in the history of the Times. It’s easy and endlessly riffable — you can use basically any fruit, and canned fruit works just as well! Adding to our weekend plans.
P.S. More fun things, and what’s your comfort movie?
