Long live the Second Street NYU dorm!!! My first time living alone. Still makes me happy to think about.

First moved in when I was fresh out of college. I remember my fist night there, taking a shower, I cracked the window in the shower open just a tad and let in the cool December air and thought to myself, “Wow! This is all mine!” It was a really magical feeling.

I got lucky in that I found a studio that had an entryway separating the kitchen from the living space. Regardless, I didn’t have enough room for a couch and a bed, so I slept on a pink pull out couch for about two years. Wouldn’t have had it any other way!

One night I got a little drunk on red wine and painted a flamingo on the wall of the entryway. I loved it right through the moment I had to paint over it.

Enjoy this time in your studio! Having less space means getting more creative, but those were some of my favorite days living there on my own!

Studio apartments are about choices and solutions: We chose not to have a dining area so that we could have a sleeping space separate from our daughter when she turned three. We have two couches, one on each floor, which become a landing spot for anything and everything: dinner, games, work from home, bedtime stories. We have managed to host holiday parties of up to 15 people and it always feels cozy, if a bit ridiculous. On the one hand, I’m looking forward to the next new space – hopefully with two bedroom doors and space for hosting dinners. On the other hand, I love not having to raise my voice to be heard ;)

Yes! I moved from a larger alcove studio facing north into a tree to a southeast-facing studio half its size, but the light made such a difference.

It was my first time living by myself, owning my life really. The fun part was when my boyfriend and I decided to renovate the apartment we bought to live together and, during the renovation, he’d move in with me. The couple of months of renovation became seven. He kept some of his clothes in the “kitchen” cupboards hahaha. We always joke that starting our married life like this was the greatest “test” and that we won’t ever get divorced. I love the memories from that little studio and all the love that I fit in there.
