I’ve heard that Target has a 5-inch shorts (Merona) and that J Crew does as well and Athleta too. I have not tried any of these personally, though!

The Patagonia baggies come in a 5″ length and I like them a lot, but they’re more for hiking/swimming/playing. Everlane’s “Easy Chino” short is 5″, but I haven’t tried it.

Hi Christina, I’m pregnant and my already-bad varicose veins are terrible. Swampy heat in DC + thigh-high compression hose = unhappy camper. Any suggestions for favorite brands of support stockings that are not terrible looking?

Oh Victoria, I feel your pain! Being pregnant in the heat of summer is hard in itself, without compression hose!
I suppose though that you need thigh-high hose, not knee-length stockings? I manage with knee-length, and I have found that cotton stockings are the best since they feel less like plastic foil. I even wore them during the hot summer of 2018. But I haven’t found any full length hose in cotton which is a shame. The knee-length ones come in many fun patterns, but I feel like it’s 1971 or I am five years old if I wear them with shorter dresses/skirts. Thus the floor-length. I buy my stockings from minfot.se, but I don’t know if they deliver internationally.

My husband and I are holed up in our dining room, each doing our best to work our respective 40 hrs/wk. We have a 2 year old at home, too. It’s … interesting. *haha, nervous sweat*

Agree. I’d love to know how people are making use of their space. Also what are you doing with your children? Do you ever long for space (in/outside)? Since your jobs are now WFH, are you considering moving? A second home?

I’d love to see a full post on people’s work from home set ups (CoJ staff and readers)! My husband and I are holed up at desks a few feet from eachother in our bedroom, together, 40 hours a week, while the 1 year old is downstairs with our nanny. We’re very lucky to have childcare and jobs we can do from home right now, so we absolutely recognize that privilege, but it’s definitely a stifling environment. We can’t really spend time in the shared areas of the house during the workday (which includes the path to the door outside), bc it derails our kid’s day if he sees us (and makes it harder to separate), so we’re kind of stuck all day. We’ve taken to calling our bed “the breakroom.”

For the commenter A: Can you do room dividers to block off a path the leads outside? An invisibility cloak? Install a tunnel? A window fire escape ladder? That sounds rough!

Imagine a world where you can add wearable pockets to any outfit without having stuff in your arms. The future is now and it’s the fanny pack! Fanny packs are life!!!!!! I have one that I use in the hospital, and a leisure fanny pack. You’d better believe they’re sexy as hell, and way more sports n’ leisure than a purse. Still salty that my ex husband held onto my dad’s vintage one. You may say I’m a dreamer, but watch me bike in a sundress with all my stuff, never setting it down on virus studded surfaces

I’ve been using one for so long. I use it for dog walks, hiking, just everything. I don’t know why purses still exist tbh.

Jenny, YES! I was in a situation where I was driving a loved one to appointments and back and forth to the hospital for a week and after one day of that I went directly to buy my fanny pack because I could NOT mentally handle keeping track of my things AND another person’s medications. My brain isn’t made for that. This thing singlehandedly saved my sanity during that stressful time. I put it on when I got dressed in the morning and pretty much only took it off when I went to bed. And the Patagonia one is only $30!!

You guys do such a great job showing a variety of people, brands and price points. I am so grateful for the opportunity to read(or not to read!) this blog.

Many of the boutique- type designers are not affordable for many of us! J.Crew and Madewell are on the pricier end of things I actually buy. I appreciate that they often show a range of items and many affordable.

To all of you complaining about the selections featured here – this comment section is as much as part of the blog as the pieces posted by the CoJ team, and readers do follow up on recommendations. So please share your own recommendations for smaller brands and designs by WOC here in the comments. Most of them I can’t afford (no, you won’t talk me into spending above my means, but I can watch for sales ) but plenty of readers can, and there is a lot of enthusiasm to learn what independent business women and designers are doing.

Since I wear a pretty full-coverage uniform at work, I’ve been living in mini-dresses with full-coverage undies on my days off. Bra is of course, optional. I’ve been asked if I feel a danger of Wardrobe Malfunctions. My answer…no. Summer is short in Canada – let those stems out to play! ?
