Joanna, I have a shopping related request. I’m attending 5 weddings this summer (more in the fall gah!!!!), and I do not have anything to wear. I’ll be seeing a lot of the same people at some of the weddings, and I’ll be going to rehearsal dinners and bachelorette parties for many of them as well. I can get away with re-wearing some pieces, but I’ll have to be creative about it. I cook for a living (read: low-wage restaurant work), but all my friends from college work in finance and the like. I’m asking for your guidance in the impossible: help me find expensive-looking wedding outfits that I can secretly re-wear, that won’t cost more than my car. I’ve been looking at sites like Reformation, but I can’t tell what will be flattering, nor if the items are flimsy.

I would also try Poshmark/eBay when you’re familiar with brand sizing and can compare dimensions with an actual dress you own – Lots of $5 pretty dresses out there!

I was at a wedding this winter, and a guest was wearing a simple but great fitting black, sleeveless jumpsuit with leopard heels. It looked so simple and elegant on her that I want to recreate and wear to all my formal (and not so formal) events. You can change shoes and/or accessories to switch it up. Throw on a jean jacket for a bachelorette party or a wrap for a fall wedding. Might not be your thing, but I’m excited to try it out and thought I would share!

Check out resale sites like Poshmark and mash that ‘offer’ button. I haven’t purchased anything new in years and you can find beautiful, high-dollar items for a steal.

Get a solid-colored dress that you can change the vibe of with a belt or scarf. Don’t be shy about borrowing dresses from your friends (I borrowed an inauguration gala dress years ago from a friend who was so happy to see it reworn.) I have a floor-length black satin skirt that is dramatic and mixes with any top. Oh, and Poshmark has amazing deals (like $40 for $200 dresses). Enjoy the summer – and if your friends get rude about seeing repeat outfits, get new friends <3

I’ve had great luck getting dressed on thredup— then you can sell it back and get a little of the cost back. I’ve found thredup prices tend to be lower than posh mark for the same pieces.

Hi Joanna – the 25% off is only if you spend $800+!!! Perhaps you should add a note to the post to make that clear :)

thank you! yes it’s “up to 25%” — otherwise 15% over $200 and 20% over $500.
