Catherine Newman’s? I struggled for a long time typing this how to address this person!) novel was a book rec, and even more pleasantly surprised to find she had guest written for CoJ! I loved her book (like ordered it for 2 people WHILE reading it) and love love love this essay.

I will paint your nails even if you are likelier than most people to die later this afternoon,” had me laugh/crying just a few sentences later. So touching, and so true. Catherine Newman is a treasure!

I had a pair of jeans like that! My whole bumper was covered in patches. Years later, when my sister started going out with a new guy, it turned out he went to college with me. Oh yeah, I know your sister! She wore those jeans with the patches! Haha! I still miss those jeans. They were my favourite! Don’t think I’d fit into them anymore though, 30 years later.
