*Adds sandalwood scrub to cart.* By the lovely Grace Farris.
P.S. The best recs and stuff I love.
Anyone just walked in to the drugstore and realised how expensive make-up is?? 2 mascaras + 3 lipsticks = $100
I’m the person who buys the prohibitively expensive retinol and forgets to put it on. Every single time.
I have never been pregnant (husband didn’t want children unfortunately) but I just have to say women are so awesome which I of course already knew. I love seeing y’all boost up one of our own with these tips and tricks. I hope you start feeling better soon and that your pregnancy continues smoothly, sorry I don’t have any tips to share. Happy Baby to you!
I live in a very dry, cold climate and I use maximum strength desitin as a lip mask overnight. It’s not quite snail serum but definitely gives me the grossies while I’m putting it on, but friends, this is magic. I wake up with amazing lips. I was not going to tell anyone about this until my dying day but I realized we are people who share good things. So there you go. Put some butt cream on your lips overnight and see what happens. Do it two or three nights in a row and it might change your life.
My lips are constantly peeling and won’t stay hydrated — tried all sorts of balms and masks. I cant tell you how excited I am to see a new-to-me recommendation! Gonna slather up tonight!
Hey SOS, I’m a nurse and you might want to try ginger ale with crackers. Ginger has been used for centuries to soothe morning sickness and crackers are gentle on your stomach plus have sodium to help with what you lose during vomiting. Sorry for being graphic. Also try sucking on peppermint candies, also used for centuries to calm that urge to purge. Good luck 🍀. Any further problems should be addressed with you OB. Some home remedies can be harmful to baby so be careful. The ones I’ve mentioned are perfectly safe. Don’t overdue the peppermint though. Follow the package recommendations for how many you should eat per day.
Okay, but, can I have the link to that scrub…?
Happy Friday CoJ!!! :)
Off-topic, BUT I am having morning sickness (first pregnancy), and it is so awful! I’m only 7 weeks along, and I don’t know how I’ll get through this trimester and the other two. Would love some encouragement, tips, or solidarity. How is it possible to be so nauseous for sooo long?
P.S. I know this isn’t babycenter, but I like COJ better ; )
These helped me AND it’s definitely brutal. Good luck! There’s another side and you’ll get there.
No real or fool-proof tips, unfortunately, just wanted to say I feel you and hope you get better soon! I drank multivitamin juice in the morning (pretty sweet, orange stuff over here). It contains way to much sugar for sure, but I felt the cold straight from the fridge refreshing and the sugar gave me the energy to get through the first few awful hours of the day (couldn’t stomach any solid food till noon), and it is not as acidic as straight orange juice. All the best to you! :)
Hi SOS! I’m so sorry your morning sickness is so nasty. It really puts a damper on the festive mood, right? Small, frequent snacks made up mostly of crackers really seemed to help me. In addition to simple fruits like bananas and apples… to ward off scurvy. BUT I’m not a doctor, so if it gets worse it might be worth while to see one (we have had a stomach bug circulating in our area the last few months and a friend of mine had it for weeks before seeing a doc and getting antibiotics – I am happy to report she is now fine :) ). I wish you all the best with this incredible life change – it is incredible and terrifying and wonderful.
If it’s any consolation, is hated my first trimesters with both pregnancies, and loved the rest!! It’s hard to believe you’ll just wake up in a few (or more) weeks and feel good, but you most likely will. Also, something my doctor told me that really helped: second and third trimesters are for nourishing the baby. First trimester is nausea survival!! Tater tots, mashed potatoes, crackers, and the occasional breaded chicken sandwich got me through.
Solidarity! It was for this reason that my boss knew I was pregnant before my family. I felt so horrible at work that I wanted to tell him what was up so he didn’t just think I was being a terrible employee.
My only advice is just eat what you feel like you can – don’t worry about trying to jam all the nutrients into your diet. If you must survive on only mashed potatoes, bread, and cheese for a couple of months (hi!) you and your baby will be totally fine.
Salt and vinegar chips!
Week 6-12 was when my nausea peaked. I called my mom crying during week 7. You’re almost done which I know sounds insane because every hour lasts forever. I think I pretty much lived on saltines and those small all fruit popsicles. I had like 3-4 popsicles a day at that point in pregnancy. I also thought a cup of crushed ice was the only way to get myself to drink any water. Showers felt good to me too and I took 2 per day. And movies in bed in a dark room if you can bear it on the weekend. Sending solidarity! It should get better soon.
Didn’t make it go away but made it less terrible: sea-bands! (I also live these for motion sickness and any random nausea I experience in life.) Good luck! I always tried to tell myself the nausea was a good sign that things were progressing as they should,to try to take comfort in the misery.
50mg b6 daily helped me. Twin pregnancy. Terrible nausea through week 33 or so. B6 saved me.
Thank you so much! All of your comments are so sweet and helpful. I’m waiting to tell my family until the pregnancy feels less vulnerable, but I did have to tell a friend about it because I was clutching a pack of sour gummies like my life depended on it, and I’m pretty sure my face was green I was so nauseous. This whole experience is wild. Thank you for making me feel less alone and giving me permission to eat potatoes, bread, and cheese. I have been feeling so guilty about the lack of salad in my life, but I’m going to try giving myself permission to eat what I can and trust my vitamins to carry me through to the promised land (2nd trimester…fingers crossed). <3
Oh, I am so sorry. I was so nauseous for weeks but at 12 weeks magically felt better so know that there is (most likely) end in sight and you will get to enjoy your pregnancy. BUT to get through those weeks my biggest piece of advice is don’t feel guilty about eating whatever your body is telling you to and you can handle. I lived on scones, Wendy’s and a decaf latte a couple times a week. I couldn’t touch a vegetable for most of my pregnancy. Baby is healthy and happy. Do what you need to get through!
Yes to all of these. Also, put a snack on your bedside table (I liked those nature valley almond butter cookie things which I would never crave in non pregnant life ) …I would often wake up nauseous at 2 am and if I tried to call back asleep , either I didn’t and the nausea got worse , or when I woke up at 6:30, the nauseous was way worse. Also, sour hard candy on hand always! It will get better . Nursing my sweet baby now who made me terribly nauseous through 12 weeks, nauseous through 15, occasionally nauseous through 18 and totally fine after that. My first two babies (all girls) only made me nauseous through 11 weeks)You’ve got this
It’s so hard! I was one of those people throwing up all day, every day but it really does get better. If it gets worse, ask your doctor about unisom and vitamin B6 (it made me too groggy to work well but works for a lot of people!). Other things that worked for me: topo chico (for some reason it was the only liquid I could keep down some days), dried apricots, white cheddar cheese and almonds. Find what works and stick to it! Most important is for you to be fed and happy. Also- whatever works I’m other arenas! I’m lucky to have a more flexible job but my supervisor was the very first person we told because I needed to work more when I could rather than traditional hours I felt guilt for like one minute that we didn’t tell our families first but whatever works! . This stage only lasts a little while and the second trimester is soooo much better!
Hi SOS, 3 babies here. Super nauseous with all of them. I tried ALL THE THINGS. One thing that helped a bit was ginger gum. One thing that I didn’t know until after seeing my dentist was that it’s important to take care of your teeth, especially if you are vomiting. He said to rinse your mouth with water after puking because the acid from your stomach can damage your teeth. I would brush right away and I ended up with a couple of cavities.
My nausea was worse in the afternoon/evenings so If I could, I would go lay in a dark room and watch a show or read. I read more books last year than I ever had. Silver lining of morning sickness ;) take care!
Hi SOS! I’m currently 8 weeks with baby #2 and very much with you. I did b6 and unisom with both pregnancies, and it really helps me. I wasn’t functional without it. Definitely explore that option with your provider, if you’re miserable. I think consistent protein and managing your blood sugar is super important, so anytime you’re able yo eat with that in mind is a win. Lily Nichols (an RD who specializes in pregnancy nutrition) is a great resource. Sending you lots of good vibes… I know for me this part of pregnancy can be terribly isolating and even depressing. I really hate feeling this way, but it won’t last.
Ask your OB about Diclegis (or OTC Unisom & B6, like another commenter mentioned)! I took the Rx when pregnant with my first and then the OTC with my second (when my new insurance didn’t cover it). It was magical. It took my nausea down to a very mild, manageable level. I’m sure everyone has different reactions so it’s not necessarily a cure-all- BUT it helped me on day 1 so I’m a fan.
SOS –
I’m currently in the latter part of my third trimester and reading these comments makes me feel weepy with empathy. I have been really lucky to experience very little sickness in my life pre-pregnancy and the all day sickness of pregnancy felt overwhelming and more mentally draining than I was prepared for. I wasn’t diagnosed with HG but was on my way and couldn’t keep anything down except orange juice, cheese and crackers.
My midwife had me try B6+Unisom but it didn’t stop the vomiting and made me feel like I had gotten hit by a truck. Surprisingly, Bonjestra (also unisom + B6 BUT it is compounded so slow release) worked much better but I had a really hard time getting it prescribed and finding a pharmacy that could do it.
I ended up needing Ondansetron (Zofran) and never really got better so still have to take it as needed, even with just a few weeks left. Feel empowered to do your own research about medication and talk to your provider to see what might work for you and your baby. And just to echo what everyone said, DO NOT STRESS about what you can keep down first trimester. I felt so fragile during 1st trimester and so completely consumed with feeling unwell that I felt like I couldn’t focus on anything else. Be gentle and loving with yourself.
I hope you start feeling better very soon, and just want to offer the perspective of someone who has stayed sick throughout their pregnancy:
My mother-in-law shared her experience of being sick the whole pregnancy and this helped me mentally prepare to not magically feel better at 12 or 16 weeks, which I think I needed or I would have felt very overwhelmed. The great thing is that the VAST majority of people do feel better….but it is okay if you don’t! Do what you need to do to continue functioning and help your baby grow (for me, this meant taking medicine even though I didn’t think I would ever want or need to!) Even with feeling pretty sick still, I have found moments of joy, happiness, and wonder in this pregnancy.
Sorry for the long and disjointed message, but I am sending so much love and support. There were times in first trimester that it felt overwhelmingly daunting to imagine x more weeks of feeling that way, but now I am almost done and feel so proud of myself. Congrats mama, you’ve got this!
Hey SOS, if you don’t like babycenter, Reddit has surprisingly supportive pregnancy communities full of people that are due at the same time as you. Search for r/November2022BumpGroup. I’m on there and due Nov. 16. :) It’s nice to have a cohort because there’s bound to be somebody going through the same thing as you.
Just wanted to chime in that I am 11 weeks and very much in the same boat (nauseous, tired, hate vegetables with the passion of a 6-year-old, want to lie down and watch movies all day, crying a lot) and all of these sweet, compassionate comments made me feel SO much better. This is such a lovely community.
I feel seen with that dryer quip!
Lol I’ve often thought that if you are the kind of person who buys snail oil and serums you are probably also together enough drink enough water and wear sunscreen and maybe *that* is what is making you look good!
Haha such a good point Cate 😄
Agree!! Lol
Hilarious. I have all these products.
Same!! The snail serum is new to me, but it kinda cracks me up every day when I use it… like… is this really what it purports to be… and, if so, am I really putting it on my face?!! HA!
