One of the reasons I love COJ is for this very reason. COJ is and always has been a lifestyle blog so before you go ahead and criticize, you should probably familiarize yourself with it.

Good point. Maybe COJ could do a post about sustainable products :-) For what it’s worth, Earth Hero is a place I’ve been going to first when I am looking for an item. They have a bamboo serving tray and a recycled stone ware platter right now. Not as cute as gingham but eco conscious!

Emma Bridgewater (who makes the I could live off sandwiches tray above) has some beautiful bamboo “melamine” trays.

The most sustainable choice is second-hand. Unfortunately that doesn’t bring in money through referral links. I love the work CoJ does and appreciate that they and many other blogs rely on sponsored links for income, but I’m becoming increasingly frustrated by the way my favourite blogs encourage consumption in a way that’s just not sustainable in 2021. I wonder what other income models there could be to support blogs like this? I’m just picturing all these lovely trays in landfill at their end of their usefulness :(

I’m pretty committed to typically buying second hand for environmental reasons. BUT this blog provides some great inspiration!

Ceramics are a great option and can be just as colorful as plastic – plus you can usually commission exactly what you want, (green gingham – sure, no problem!), from any craft fair potter in your neighborhood. Win win, as you support local creatives and get a great item. I know from my pottery class that a tray like that one is easy enough for even a beginner to make so it can probably be had for close to the same price if you ask.

I would have to agree that if you are looking for content that is free of referral links and ads, you need to subscribe to newsletters and blogs that you pay for. That isn’t the model for this website but there are quality places to go. I do think a lot of my previously loved sites have gone downhill due to the incessant advertising and prioritizing revenue. COJ is still a comforting place to me that stimulates my mind. I think if readers request some posts about sustainability, they would support that! After complaints about Amazon links, they started looking for more ethical businesses to promote. Nothing is perfect but I do believe COJ listens to feedback and strives for progress.

Wait, is Fishs Eddy is a shop? Its the name of a super tiny town in upstate NY too! It wasn’t far from where I grew up. That can’t be a coincidence!
